I'm trying out an new service, one that I hope will replace Storify which was a very powerful aggregation and story telling tool. The new tool is Wakelet and here is an example. I pulled a series of links from a Twitter account I follow. 

Week 7 After the Break

Twitter, for all of its weirdness is a big part of digital journalism environment. No way to learn about it from the outside, total immersion is the only way to go.

Build a Twitter network focused on Digital Journalism and share resources with the class at #BUDigitalJournalism. I'll be using this as a main channel for the course from here forward.

I took a trip to Brandon Hills. and went for a hike.
Digital Journalism like legacy journalism is used to help people make sense of the world and make appropriate choices.

In the case of digital journalism one of the beats is the digital "turn" that has transformed the world. Journalists need tools and frameworks for critical analysis.

Technological Determinism vs Social Shaping of Technology are philosophical dichotomies that are used to understand changes.
One of the definitions of "human" is that we use tools, since we were homo habilus.

 Does society change based on the technology available or does technology arise out of a social need?

All these are great starting points for digital journalists. They give a foothold for action on complex stories and help people understand what is going on in their worlds.

Week Six: Maps and More New Forms of Journalism

 1. Preliminary grade for blog.

This week I will begin assessing your blogs for 10% of the available 40% of the mark (as described in the course syllabus). Make sure you have at least one blog post for each week of the class so far (5 posts). It is easier if you post weekly but you can also post multiple times to catch up.

2. Tracking things down on the internet.

3. Journalism with Geodata

4. A bit of theory a bit of practice

The last few classes explored some features of new forms of journalism in a digital age.  Data Journalism, Citizen's Journalism, and variants. On an even larger scale we can compare and contrast the idea of stateless journalism with legacy journalism.

New forms of journalism involve some radical institutional level changes as described and analyzed in the article:

Block quotes

Here is an example of creating a block quotation with the WISIWIG editor. I got this quote from a paper that was in my Zotero collection. I copied a section of the text and placed it in the post and then used the cite function to place the citation inside the quote and the bibliographic function to make the reference list entry. This is not exactly APA format because the Blogger editor doesn't easily lend itself to that style. Still the main APA organizational principles are evident.

 In the first decade and a half of the 21st century, audiences, in addition to changing their preferences and consumption habits, have also become active. Citizens are not satisfied with passively consuming news, and pursue greater participation, both outside and through the media. In some cases, this implies, at least potentially, becoming involved in all the phases of the production process. As was pointed out at the beginning, following Thompson (THOMPSON, 1988), audiences are breaking with the symbolic power of the media, which is now shifting to the active audience. (Masip, Guallar, Peralta, Ruiz, & Suau, 2015)
